Sometimes getting bogged down by heavy luggage can be a pain. Packing light (aka only a carry-on) has various benefits including, avoiding baggage fees, not having to worry about losing your bags, and more mobility. You’ll also have the opportunity to get out of the airport sooner because you won’t be stuck waiting for your bags at the baggage claim. It may seem daunting, but packing light is an excellent way to travel. Here are a few tips for packing light.

Use a list: Writing down everything needed for a trip gives you a good visualization of what you’re packing. Once your list is created, eliminate any “extra” items (like your additional 5th pair of shoes or extra jacket). Process of elimination slims down your load immensely and prevents you from bringing stuff you won’t even wear. A packing list also helps you get in the mindset “if it’s not on the list, it’s not getting packed.” When in doubt, stick to the list.

Think density: Try to think of your suitcase or backpack as a black hole; everything should be so compact that there’s no extra space. Strategically folding and organizing your clothing keeps everything compact as well. The Lonely planet suggests folding and rolling your clothes as the best option for storing all necessary items. Rolling your clothing also prevents wrinkles.

The rule of three: When you’re packing only bring three of each item; this means, three socks, three pairs of underwear, three shirts, etc. You’ll be surprised at how much room you have left over for souvenirs and other items you pick up during your travels. There’s really no need for the extra pairs of shoes and shirts (chances are you won’t even wear them.) When you’re packing remember the motto, “Wear one, wash one, dry one.”

Purchase when you get there: Unless you’re taking a trip to a remote location, there will be plenty of opportunities to purchase additional toiletries once you get to your destination. It can be a hassle to make sure all of your liquids meet the TSA requirements as well. Another good option is to split toiletries with your travel companions (i.e. shampoo, conditioner, etc.), it will lessen the load for everyone!
