According to a study by Best Western International and AAA, over half of the pet owners in the U.S. take their dogs and cats with them on vacation. Depending on what kind of trip you are taking with your furry friend, there are a few different things you can do to make it easier. If you want to take a road trip or fly with your fur baby, here are some tips to make the trip as stress-free as possible.

Road Trips

    • Before going on a long trip, take your pet on some short drives to see if they get anxious or car sick.
    • Your pet should be restrained with a pet seat belt, travel crate, or a pet car seat. It will ensure a safe trip for all.
    • Make sure you have a name and address tag on your pet. Also, attach a second tag with where you are staying during your trip. It’s also a good idea to bring your pet’s medical and vaccination records along.
    • Stop every few hours to let your pet go potty and get a little exercise.
    • Make sure your pet stays hydrated. Offer water frequently during the trip.
    • Within 10 minutes on an 85-degree day, the temperature inside the car can be 110 degrees. If you’re someplace where pets are not allowed, leave them at the hotel or at home, not the car.

Flying with Pets

    • Very young, old, or pets in ill health probably shouldn’t fly. Likewise, some dog breeds don’t do well traveling in cargo. Snub-nosed breeds like pugs are prone to breathing problems. In fact, some major airlines don’t allow these breeds to fly in cargo.
    • Check the fees and regulations for your airline. Also, check the airline’s history of flying pets, such as how many have been lost, injured, or died.
    • Likewise, find out what vaccinations may be needed and possible quarantine requirements.
    • Get a carrier with room for your pet to stand and turn around without hitting its head. Get your pet familiarized with being in the carrier. The USDA also requires “Live Animal” stickers, food and water dishes, bedding, and upright arrows.
    • Always attach your contact information to your pet’s collar as well as the carrier.

Make sure to follow these tips to have a fun and stress-free trip with your pet!
